Evelynn Hammonds is the Inaugural Audre Lorde Visiting Professor of Queer Studies at Spelman College since 2022. She also serves as a member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, where she chairs the Department of the History of Science and directs the Project on Race & Gender in Science & Medicine at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research.

Her research explores the intersection of scientific, medical, and socio-political concepts of race in the United States, with a focus on race and gender in science studies, feminist theory, and histories of science and public health. She has contributed to foundational scholarship such as The Nature of Difference: Sciences of Race in the United States from Jefferson to Genomics (2008).

- Elected to the National Academy of Medicine (2018) and American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2021)
Hammonds has held significant leadership roles, including Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity at Harvard (2005-2008) and Dean of Harvard College (2008-2013). She served on President Barack Obama’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (2010-2017) and the President’s Commission on Excellence in Higher Education for African Americans (2011-2017). She also chaired the National Science Foundation’s Committee on Equal Opportunity in Science and Engineering (CEOSE) (2009-2014) and joined the National Academies’ Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine (CWSEM) in 2017.
