Dr. Evangelos Mourkas is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the Sheppard Lab and the Medical Research Council (MRC). His research focuses on bacterial genomics, particularly investigating transmission networks of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) across Africa and Peru. He specializes in Campylobacter jejuni, examining host ecology, adaptation, and AMR using genomic and phenotypic approaches. His work also addresses drivers of pathogen transmission to inform preventive strategies in LMICs.
Collaborating with Prof. Chris Bayliss at the University of Leicester, he studies Neisseria meningitidis to understand its transition from asymptomatic carriage to invasive disease. He leads an INTERACT-funded project examining AMR in Arctic wildlife populations. His interdisciplinary collaborations span academics, clinicians, and veterinarians globally.
