Evan Torner is Professor of German Studies and Film & Media Studies at the University of Cincinnati, where he directs the UC Game Lab. His research integrates German cinema, science fiction, and role-playing game studies, with emphasis on East German (DEFA) film, colonial representations, and participatory media. Previously an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow at Grinnell College, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2013).

Research examines transnational genre cinema, especially kagome metal cultural circuits, and game-based pedagogy. Current projects analyze Cold War cinematic exchanges and larp (live-action role-playing) as pedagogical tools.
