Eva Maria Steiner is a Professor of Real Estate and Elliott Professor of Risk Management at The Pennsylvania State University’s Smeal College of Business, where she also serves as Associate Director of the Borrelli Institute for Real Estate Studies. Previously, she held roles at Cornell University and the University of Cambridge. Her expertise spans real estate finance, risk management, and the interplay between climate change and commercial real estate.
Educated at the University of Cambridge (Ph.D., M.Phil. in Land Economy/Real Estate Finance) and Heilbronn University (B.A. in Business Administration), her research focuses on private equity investments, PPP loan impacts, and macroeconomic factors affecting real estate markets. She has published extensively in journals like Journal of Financial Economics and Real Estate Economics, with recent work analyzing climate change’s effects on property values and the role of quantitative easing in mortgage-backed securities.
Awarded the 2024 Edwin Mills Best Paper Award and a Fellow of St. John’s College, she also leads initiatives in academic service, including editorial roles at Real Estate Economics and the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics. Her advising includes Ph.D. students focused on real estate markets and financial risk. She has secured grants from institutions like the Real Estate Research Institute and the Smeal Center for the Business of Sustainability.
Engaged in outreach, she contributes to industry panels, media commentary, and executive education programs on real estate trends. Her work bridges academic research with practical insights, influencing policy and investment strategies in commercial real estate.
