Eva Hedlund is a Professor of Neurochemistry at Stockholm University's Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics within the Faculty of Science. Her laboratory is situated in Room M 410 at Svante Arrhenius väg 16 in Stockholm.
Dr. Hedlund's research focuses on understanding mechanisms of selective neuronal vulnerability and resilience in neurodegenerative diseases, with particular emphasis on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Her work investigates why specific neuron types are selectively vulnerable to neurodegenerative disease processes, despite disease-causing genes often being broadly expressed throughout the nervous system. She develops innovative methodologies including LCM-seq (spatial RNA sequencing at single-cell level) and Axon-seq (for sequencing axonal content) to study disease mechanisms at unprecedented resolution.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on neuronal vulnerability patterns in ALS and Parkinson's disease, with emphasis on developing and applying novel sequencing technologies to study motor neurons at single-cell resolution. Her work bridges fundamental neuroscience with translational approaches, particularly through stem cell models and gene therapy applications.
Dr. Hedlund leads an active research group comprising several researchers, postdocs, and PhD students who collaborate on projects related to motor neuron diseases. Her laboratory has established strong expertise in stem cell modeling of neurodegenerative conditions and has developed specialized techniques for analyzing neuronal subpopulations with different vulnerability profiles.
