Eunice Sahle

Eunice Sahle is an Associate Professor in the Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies and the Curriculum in Global Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). She concurrently serves as Director of UNC-CH’s African Studies Center and has previously held leadership roles as Chair of the Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies (2012-2016 and 2017-2021). She holds fellowships with the African Academy of Sciences and UNC-CH’s Center for Urban and Regional Studies.

Education: B.A. Political Science and International Development from the University of Toronto, Canada; M.A. Political Science from the University of Toronto, Canada; Ph.D. Political Studies from Queen’s University, Canada.

Her research focuses on Human Rights, Democracy, and Constitutionalism in Africa, alongside the Political Economy of Development, NGOs, and Environmental Policies. She explores African diaspora formations in Canada and Europe, and analyzes socio-cultural processes and global governance institutions. Her recent work examines human rights dynamics in Malawi and Kenya through an ongoing book project.

Publications highlight interdisciplinary themes including Julius Nyerere’s legacy, globalization’s impact on Africa, and contemporary struggles for democracy and human rights. Her scholarship bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical case studies across sub-Saharan contexts.

Her advisory and grant work has supported institutional leadership roles in academic governance and international partnerships. She oversees the African Studies Center, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration on African-focused research and education initiatives.
