Eun-Young Kim, PhD, is a Research Professor in the Department of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. Her work is deeply integrated with the Center for Human Immunobiology, the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS), and the Simpson Querrey Institute for Epigenetics, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to infectious disease research.
Education:
- MS, Korea University (1992)
- PhD, Korea University (1997)
Postdoctoral Training:
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Stanford University, Infectious Diseases (2001)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Infectious Diseases (2002)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Northwestern University, Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, Nanotechnology (2005)
Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of HIV-1 and other viral pathogens, including drug resistance, host genetic susceptibility, and viral evolution. She employs advanced techniques such as whole genome sequencing, targeted re-sequencing, and multimodal single-cell analysis to study host-virus regulatory interfaces. Her work has major implications for understanding immune escape, viral persistence, and vaccine development.
Recent publications reveal a strong focus on HIV latency reversal, neurological impacts of viral infections (including HIV and Long COVID), and systems-level identification of host factors in influenza. These studies often involve large cohort data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) and cutting-edge proteomic and genomic methodologies.
Scientific Awards:
- Young Investigator Award, Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (2005)
Dr. Kim actively contributes to the scientific community through leadership roles in national working groups, including the Genomics and Viral & Immune Pathogenesis Working Groups of the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (NHLBI), and the Systems Biology Clinical Working Group (NIH/NIAID). She also serves on the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Virology. Her research is supported by institutional affiliations and collaborative networks, though specific grants are not listed in the text. She does not currently report any external professional relationships for 2024.
She is a key member of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Feinberg, contributing to world-class investigations into HIV and antimicrobial resistance. Her lab is based at the Robert H Lurie Medical Research Center, where she leads research integrating virology, genomics, and immunology to tackle global infectious disease challenges.
