Dr Eun-Mee Kim serves as Lecturer in Neurobiology within the School of Psychology at Ulster University's Faculty of Life & Health Sciences. She holds multiple administrative roles including Chair of the School Ethics Committee and Project Co-Ordinator for the Masters degree Conversion Course. Her academic journey includes an M.Sc. from Seoul National University and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Kim's research centers on neurodegenerative disease mechanisms with dual focus areas: (1) Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease neurobiology examining oligomer-induced behavioral decline and nanoparticle effects on protein misfolding; (2) Brain reward circuitry investigating opioid roles in ingestive behavior and melanocortin-neuropeptide interactions in feeding regulation. Her work bridges molecular neuroscience with behavioral outcomes using rodent models.
Her research program has secured funding from prestigious sources including the Wellcome Trust, European Commission, and industry partners like Senexis Ltd. The 2009-2012 European Commission project 'Do nanoparticles induce neurodegenerative diseases?' specifically investigated reactive oxidative species formation and protein aggregation phenomena.
As an educator, Dr. Kim coordinates final-year modules in Psychopharmacology and Behavioural Neuroscience while supervising PhD students. She maintains professional affiliations as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Member of Alzheimer's Research UK, demonstrating commitment to both academic excellence and disease-focused research communities.
