Dr. Eugenio Fornasiero is a Part-time Research Fellow in Physiology at the Department of Life Sciences (DSV) of the University of Trieste since February 2022. He also serves as laboratory director at the Department of Neuro- and Sensory Physiology at the University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany. His academic roles include membership in the Department Council and multiple Neuroscience Course of Study Recommendations committees (SM54, SM75, SM75A).
His research focuses on presynaptic physiology, particularly the mechanisms regulating neuronal development and aging. Dr. Fornasiero's work centers on protein turnover in the brain, wobble nucleotide usage and protein stability, and synaptic vesicle recycling, stability, and trafficking. His laboratory develops advanced labeling techniques combining microscopy and mass spectrometry to assess protein stability in various model systems.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent research trajectory in neuroscience with emphasis on protein dynamics in neural systems. His work spans molecular neuroscience, proteomics, and cellular biology, with particular focus on how protein turnover mechanisms relate to brain aging and neurodegeneration. His publications demonstrate expertise in advanced imaging techniques and quantitative proteomics approaches.
Dr. Fornasiero has established significant international collaborations with researchers at institutions including the University Medical School in Göttingen, Leibniz Institute on Aging in Jena, MPI-CBG in Dresden, Columbia University, Yale University, Northwestern University, and Vanderbilt University.
His educational background includes a degree in Medical Biotechnology from the University of Modena (2005) and a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from San Raffaele University of Milan and the Open University (UK) (2010). He completed postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Prof. Silvio O. Rizzoli in Göttingen after working with Prof. Carlos Dotti at the VIB in Leuven, Belgium.
