Eugene Mamontov is a Distinguished Research Staff member and Chemical Spectroscopy Group Leader at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Neutron Scattering Division. He serves as the BWAVES Instrument Scientist for the SNS Second Target Station Project. With over 250 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Mamontov is a leading researcher in neutron scattering techniques and applications for studying material dynamics.
Dr. Mamontov received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. His academic and professional journey includes:
- Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, University of Pennsylvania (1999)
- Postdoctoral research with Prof. Takeshi Egami at the University of Pennsylvania (1999-2003)
- Research associate at NIST Center for Neutron Research and University of Maryland (2003-2006)
Dr. Mamontov's research focuses on microscopic dynamics across diverse material systems, including solids, liquids, biological materials, and soft matter. His expertise in neutron scattering instrumentation has led to significant advances in understanding material properties at the atomic level. He specializes in quasi-elastic neutron scattering techniques to study dynamics in energy storage materials, polymers, and biological systems, with particular emphasis on proton transport, polymer electrolytes, and energy storage applications.
Analysis of Dr. Mamontov's extensive publication record (over 250 papers) reveals a strong evolution toward energy storage research, particularly for batteries and supercapacitors. His work spans fundamental studies of transport mechanisms to applied research on novel electrode materials, with consistent focus on neutron scattering methodology development. Recent publications show increasing integration of machine learning approaches and sustainable materials development, while maintaining strong emphasis on fundamental dynamics studies.
Dr. Mamontov has made substantial contributions to neutron scattering instrumentation development:
- Instrument Scientist for BASIS spectrometer at First SNS Target Station (2006-2022)
- Instrument Scientist for BWAVES spectrometer at Second SNS Target Station (2022-present)
- Group Leader for Chemical Spectroscopy Group (2023-present)
As Group Leader of the Chemical Spectroscopy Group, Dr. Mamontov oversees research that applies neutron scattering techniques to solve complex problems in chemistry and materials science. His leadership extends to major projects like the Second Target Station, where he contributes to developing next-generation neutron instrumentation for advanced materials characterization across multiple scientific disciplines.
