Eugene M. Avrutin

Eugene M. Avrutin is the Tobor Family Endowed Professor of Modern European Jewish History at the University of Illinois, with affiliations in the Departments of History, Slavic Languages & Literatures, and the Program in Jewish Culture and Society. He is also involved with the European Union Center and the Russian, East European and Eurasian Center. His research spans Modern Jewish History, Eastern Europe, and Russian Empire, focusing on documentation practices, racial concepts, and religious coexistence.

Avrutin's scholarship examines imperial legal culture, anti-Jewish violence, and borderland dynamics. His recent works investigate pogroms during wars and revolutions, while his monographs explore systemic racism in Russia and historical case studies like the Velizh Affair.

His research has received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, and the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. He is currently working on a book analyzing everyday crime and neighborly relations in imperial contexts.
