Eugene Fletcher is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Carleton University, Faculty of Science. He holds a B.Sc. from KNUST, Ghana and a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh. His office and lab are located in the Nesbitt Building (Office 245, Lab 215).
Research focuses on redirecting yeast metabolic pathways to convert plastic/agroforestry waste into bioproducts using synthetic biology, microbial physiology, and transcriptomics. Key organisms studied are Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Torulaspora delbrueckii. Collaborations with industry aim to create sustainable biorefining solutions. Current projects involve stress tolerance mechanisms in engineered yeast strains and CRISPR-aided strain optimization.
Labs and facilities include yeast metabolic engineering setups and advanced molecular biology tools. Recruitment for students interested in microbial biotechnology and systems biology is ongoing. Research emphasizes industrial applications in biofuel production and waste valorization.
