Ethan Vishniac is a Research Professor at the William H. Miller III Department of Physics & Astronomy, Johns Hopkins University (JHU). He specializes in theoretical astrophysics, focusing on magnetized turbulence, dynamos in stellar and galactic systems, and magnetic field dynamics. He has held editorial leadership roles since 2006, serving as Editor-in-Chief of The Astrophysical Journal and all journals of the American Astronomical Society (AAS).
Education: PhD from Harvard University (1980), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University under J. Ostriker. Career highlights include faculty roles at the University of Texas (1982–1998), McMaster University (2007–2012), University of Saskatchewan (2012–2015), and his return to JHU in 2015.
Research Interests: His work addresses the origin and role of large-scale magnetic fields in astrophysical systems, including angular momentum transfer in accretion disks and stars. He employs theoretical models to study cosmic magnetohydrodynamics and plasma processes.
- Awards: Presidential Young Investigator Award (1985), Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1986), Helen P. Warner Prize (1990), APS Fellow (2002).
- Editorial Leadership: Overseeing AAS journals since 2006, shaping astrophysical publication standards.
His career spans interdisciplinary research and academic leadership, contributing to both foundational astrophysics and scholarly communication.
