Esther de Bruijn is a Lecturer in African Literature at the Department of English, King's College London. She joined King's in 2019 after serving as Assistant Professor of Postcolonial Literature at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada from 2014-2019. Her academic background includes a PhD and MA in English from the University of Toronto, and a year of African Studies at the University of Ghana.
Research Interests:
- Ghanaian popular fiction aesthetics
- Afro-Gothic and Afrofuturist narratives
- Graphic novels and visual storytelling
- Black British popular arts
- Anti-colonial thought
- Critical race theory
Academic Activities:
- Current PhD supervision on Afrofuturism, Black Victorian networks, Australian First Nations screenplays, and Bronte family graphic novels
- Teaching modules: Afrofuturism, Afro-Gothic literature, Popular Africa in London, and The Global Graphic Novel
- Active public engagement (e.g., lectures, interviews, theatrical collaborations)
