Prof. Esther Stouthamer is a Professor in Physical Geography at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences, specializing in delta evolution and subsidence dynamics. She co-leads the Water, Climate & Future Deltas research community under Utrecht University's Pathways to Sustainability theme. Her work focuses on Holocene delta development, integrating geological, geomorphological, and anthropogenic factors to understand long-term environmental changes.
Her research emphasizes the Rhine-Meuse delta as a key case study, exploring processes like avulsion, compaction, and subsidence. She has pioneered studies on human-induced river changes, including how ancient land use inadvertently altered river courses. Recent projects include NWO-funded initiatives like the LOSS consortium addressing subsidence governance and the 'Finding Suitable Grounds' project investigating agricultural origins in Dutch lowlands.
Stouthamer's work bridges academic research with practical applications, collaborating with policymakers and engineers on delta sustainability. She has published extensively on subsidence mechanisms, river dynamics, and geohazard mitigation. Her contributions include co-authoring the textbook De vorming van het land and leading international projects like IGCP 663 on coastal subsidence control.
