Dr Esther McGuinness is a Senior Lecturer in Law and Head of the School of Law at Ulster University's Belfast campus. She co-founded the award-winning Ulster University Law Clinic and the Family Law Clinic @ Magee, specializing in employment law, social justice, and human rights. A qualified mediator with over 20 years of experience, she actively bridges legal practice and education while contributing to international law discourse through her role as Northern Ireland Correspondent for the Irish Year Book of International Law.

Her research focuses on employment law, human rights frameworks, and social justice initiatives, particularly addressing domestic violence and marginalized communities. Recent work includes a European H2020 project analyzing big data for legal retention systems.
She supervises LLM students at the Law Clinic and has secured grants from the British Academy, Nuffield Foundation, Legal Education Fund, and Horizon 2020. Her affiliations include Law Centre NI, Mediation NI, and the Irish Association of Law Teachers.
