Dr. Esther Leemann is an anthropologist and senior researcher/teaching staff member at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (ISEK) at the University of Zurich. With over 20 years of fieldwork experience in Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Vietnam) and Central America (Nicaragua), her work examines the socio-political dimensions of land conflicts, indigenous territoriality, displacement, and post-disaster reconstruction.

Her research spans critical development studies, focusing on indigenous rights, rural livelihoods, and the impacts of large-scale plantations in Cambodia (funded by SNSF). She also explores disaster management, institutional policy shifts, and socio-cultural adaptation in Nicaragua and Vietnam, with projects integrating ethnographic methods and documentary filmmaking.
Dr. Leemann contributes to science communication through workshops on indigenous lifestyles at the Zug University of Teacher Education and supervises doctoral students in research-based teaching. She coordinates the Swiss Graduate Program in Anthropology, fostering collaboration between French- and German-speaking Swiss scholars.
