Associate Professor Esther Lau serves as Associate Professor and Deputy Associate Dean (Academic) for Interprofessional Education & Workforce within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at The University of Queensland. She is also affiliated with the Centre for the Business and Economics of Health and leads the Master of Clinical Pharmacy program through the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor (Honours) of Pharmacy, Postgraduate Certificate in Research Commercialisation, and Doctor of Philosophy, all from The University of Queensland, complemented by a Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice from Queensland University of Technology.
Professor Lau's research focuses on critical areas of pharmacy practice including medication safety, drug delivery systems, and aged care medication management. Her work explores medication administration challenges for patients with swallowing difficulties, the role of pharmacists in vaccination programs, and environmental sustainability in pharmacy practice. She has pioneered research on medication lubricants and their impact on drug dissolution and absorption, particularly relevant for elderly patients in aged care facilities.
Her publication portfolio demonstrates consistent contributions to pharmaceutical sciences, with recent emphasis on medication safety interventions, consumer involvement in healthcare design, and the management of urinary tract infections by community pharmacists. Her work bridges clinical practice with academic research to improve medication outcomes.
Professor Lau actively supervises multiple PhD candidates, including projects on perioperative management of anticoagulated patients, medication safety service co-design, and pharmaceutical supply chain resilience. Her supervision portfolio reflects her commitment to developing the next generation of pharmacy researchers and practitioners.
She has received research funding including a Queensland Pharmacy Research Trust Open grant for investigating plant proteins in controlled release drug delivery systems, demonstrating her innovative approach to pharmaceutical formulation challenges.
