Professor Esther Eidinow holds the Chair in Ancient History at the University of Bristol's Department of Classics & Ancient History. Elected Fellow of the British Academy (2024), her expertise encompasses ancient Greek religion, magic, and social emotions. She leads interdisciplinary projects combining cognitive theory with historical analysis.
Her research investigates oracles, curse tablets, concepts of fate/luck, and witchcraft trials through frameworks of social anthropology and network theory. Current projects explore narrative plausibility, environmental risk perception in antiquity, and virtual reality reconstructions of oracular sites.

She directs the AHRC-funded Virtual Reality Oracle project and supervises doctoral research on cult transmission, cognitive approaches to ritual, and representations of grief.
