Dr. Esther Brownsmith serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Dayton, having previously held a Postdoctoral Researcher position at MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society.
Her academic credentials include a master's degree from Yale Divinity School earned summa cum laude and a doctorate from Brandeis University.
Dr. Brownsmith specializes in innovative biblical interpretation with particular focus on gender representation in religious texts. Her research examines how women are metaphorically portrayed in biblical narratives, challenging traditional interpretations through interdisciplinary approaches that bridge textual criticism, gender studies, and religious ethics. She investigates the cultural and theological implications of gendered biblical imagery and its contemporary relevance.
She is author of the forthcoming book Three Biblical Metaphors of Women as Food: The Cutlet, the Dumpling, and the Vine in Routledge's 'The Ancient Word' series and serves as editor-in-chief for the upcoming volume Unruly Books: Rethinking Ancient and Academic Imaginations of Religious Texts.
Her published scholarship includes 'Burning Desire Punished by Fire,' which analyzes why the promiscuous daughter of a priest and Tamar (Judah's widowed daughter-in-law) receive death by fire sentences in biblical texts, exploring the concept of 'poetic justice' in these immolation narratives.
Dr. Brownsmith maintains that 'current biblical scholarship which undermines the traditional belief in the textual integrity of the Torah and its accurate historicity provides a precious opportunity to engender a spiritual revitalization of traditional Judaism,' positioning her work at the intersection of academic rigor and religious practice.
