Esperanza Arnés Prieto

Dr. Esperanza Arnés Prieto is a visiting researcher at the Center for Research in Environmental Geography (CIGA) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), conducting research on agri-food systems linked to milpa in Michoacán, Oaxaca, and in Mexican biosphere reserves.

Her educational qualifications include:

• PhD in Agro-environmental Technology and Sustainable Agriculture, Polytechnic University of Madrid
• Master's degree in Globalization, Development, and International Cooperation Studies, University of the Basque Country

Her research interests encompass Sustainable Agri-food Systems, Food and Nutritional Security and Sovereignty, UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks, and Sustainability assessments in peasant systems. She has extensive experience in sustainability assessments in peasant and local agri-food systems, as evidenced by her international publications.

Previously, she served as a Program Officer in the Exact and Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO, coordinating the Man and the Biosphere Program and the Geoparks Program in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. She has also taught undergraduate and master's level courses at UNAM, UPM, and the University of Córdoba.
