Dr. Erwin Schettino is a Lecturer in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at ETH Zurich, affiliated with the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology (GeoPetro). His research focuses on mantle processes, geochemical tracers in magmatic systems, and the role of nanomaterials in critical metal transfer. He investigates topics such as mantle-derived xenoliths, lithosphere evolution, and ore genesis mechanisms. His work integrates field studies, experimental petrology, and analytical techniques to understand Earth’s interior dynamics and metallogenic pathways.
Dr. Schettino’s affiliations include ETH Zurich’s D-EAPS (Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences) and collaborations with institutions such as the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology. He contributes to courses like 'Composition and Evolution of the Earth and Planets' in the Autumn Semester 2025.
His research interests encompass geochemistry, petrology, and the application of nanoscale analysis in geology. Recent work highlights Li enrichment in peridotites, sulfide mineralogy in igneous rocks, and the role of slab melting in Li-rich magma formation. He explores how mantle metasomatism influences metallogeny in regions like central Mexico and Spain’s Catalan Volcanic Zone.
Dr. Schettino’s publications emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to understanding magmatic-hydrothermal systems and critical metal distribution. His studies often address the interplay between tectonic settings, mantle processes, and ore-forming mechanisms.
