Professor Erran Carmel is a tenured full Professor in the Information Technology department at the Kogod School of Business, American University. He previously served as interim Dean of the Kogod School of Business from 2014-2016 and has been a foundational scholar in the field of global information technology management.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona
- MBA from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)
- B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley
Professor Carmel's research spans multiple eras of digital transformation:
- Current work focuses on digital identity, crypto ethics, and the future of work
- Earlier seminal contributions examined distributed software teams and global IT outsourcing
- His research has consistently addressed practical challenges in global technology coordination
His scholarly impact is demonstrated through over 100 publications including three landmark books that established frameworks for understanding global technology work. His 1999 book 'Global Software Teams' pioneered the field, while 'Offshoring Information Technology' (2005) and 'I'm Working While They're Sleeping' (2011) further developed critical concepts in global work coordination.
Professor Carmel maintains an active international presence through visiting professorships at institutions across five countries and continues to contribute to academic discourse through consulting and speaking engagements with industry groups.
He is currently teaching courses including 'Complex Problems Seminar: Futures: What Will Be in 2050?' and 'Managing Digital Organization' for the Spring and Fall 2025 semesters, demonstrating ongoing engagement with emerging technology challenges.
