Erman Acar

Dr. Erman Acar is an Assistant Professor for Explainable AI in Finance at the University of Amsterdam, affiliated with the Socially Intelligent Artificial Systems (SIAS) group at the Informatics Institute (IvI) and the Cognition, Language and Computation (CLC) lab at the Institute of Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC). His research focuses on Neuro-Symbolic AI architectures that combine machine learning with symbolic approaches to enhance reasoning, explainability, and causality in AI systems, particularly applied to financial services.

He previously held postdoctoral positions at VU Amsterdam (2018-2021) and Leiden University (2021-2022) and earned his PhD at the University of Mannheim (2014-2017) and an MSc in Computational Logic from TU-Wien and TU-Dresden (2012). His work spans applications in fintech, logic, causality, and AI for social good.

He is currently recruiting a PhD candidate for research on neuro-symbolic approaches in XAI for finance, in collaboration with the upcoming AI4Fintech hub in Amsterdam.
