Dr. Erkki Harjula is a tenure-track Associate Professor at the Centre for Wireless Communications - Networks and Systems (CWC-NS) within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) at the University of Oulu. His research focuses on bridging computer science and wireless communications to advance digital healthcare through technologies like Medical IoT, Edge-AI, and secure distributed networks.
- Education: D.Sc. (2016), M.Sc. (Tech) (2007)
Research Areas: His work centers on Edge-cloud continuum architectures, network security, and green communications for healthcare applications, leveraging IoT and machine learning. Collaborations span academia, clinics, and industry partners.
Projects & Leadership: He leads the WEALTH research team and contributes to 6G Flagship initiatives, including the Computing on the edge-to-cloud continuum theme. He serves as Principal Investigator in projects like Eware-6G, Tomohead, and Tech2Heal.
Teaching & Editorial Roles: Harjula teaches the Introduction to Internet graduate course and acts as an associate editor for the Springer Wireless Networks (WINE) journal.
Previous Experience: Prior roles include postdoctoral researcher (2016-2020) and project manager at CWC-NS, research scientist positions at Center for Internet Excellence (2013-2015) and MediaTeam (2000-2014), and a visiting scientist stint at Columbia University (2008-2009).
