Erin Espelie is an Associate Professor and Department Chair at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her work bridges scientific research, environmental discourse, and artistic inquiry through documentary film and transdisciplinary collaboration. She co-founded the NEST Studio for the Arts, focusing on Nature, Environment, Science & Technology, and oversees grants and exhibitions in this field. Her hybrid writing appears in journals like Leonardo and Natural History, where she serves as Editor.
Education: Molecular Biology (B.S., Cornell University), MFA (Duke University). Previous roles include teaching at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Center for Documentary Studies (2012–2015).
Research emphasizes visualizing scientific processes, ecological precarity, and the intersection of art/science. Notable projects include the award-winning film The Lanthanide Series (2015) and the Mellon Sawyer Seminar grant initiative Environmental Futures (2020–2022).
