Dr. Eriko Tomizawa-Kay is an Associate Professor in Japanese Language & Culture at the University of East Anglia's School of Media, Language and Communication Studies. She holds a PhD in modern Japanese art history from SOAS, University of London (2013) and was an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2013-2014). Currently an Academic Associate at the Sainsbury Institute for Japanese Arts and Cultures, her research examines Okinawan arts within regional, transregional, and transnational frameworks.
Her scholarly work investigates the socio-cultural complexities of Okinawan identity through historical and contemporary artistic practices, examining intersections between art, politics, and identity formation. Current projects include 'Okinawa-ga: Aspects of Contemporary Okinawan Art' and 'Shared Coasts, Divided Historiographies', exploring artistic responses to regional political contexts.
Tomizawa-Kay's publications include edited volumes on Okinawan art and transnational East Asian art history. Recent exhibitions and workshops showcase contemporary Okinawan craft artists, supported by Japan Foundation funding. Her research recognitions include the Japan Foundation Fellowship (2021) and Toyota Visiting Professorship at University of Michigan (2023).
