Erik Westphal

Erik Westphal serves as a Research Fellow at the Chair of Microfluidics, University of Rostock, a position held since January 2020 where he conducts research in microfluidics and additive manufacturing systems.

Dr. Westphal earned his graduate engineering degree from the University of Rostock (2010-2015) with specialization in mechanical design technology and lightweight construction, complemented by International Welding Engineer certification through DVS-IIW. He holds the doctoral title Dr.-Ing. (Doktor der Ingenieurwissenschaften) in Engineering.

His research spans Microfluidics, Additive Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Welding Technology, Mechanical Design, and Lightweight Construction. Current work focuses on developing AI-based real-time parameter analysis systems for additive manufacturing processes to enhance 3D printing quality control and efficiency, building upon his thesis research in welding parameter analysis.

Prior industry experience includes mechanical design engineering at Eggersmann GmbH (recycling technology) and systems engineering at RST Rostock System-Technik GmbH (space/industrial applications). During graduate studies, he worked as a research assistant at Fraunhofer IGP Rostock and completed his diploma thesis at EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH.
