Erik Ulman is an Advanced Lecturer in the Department of Music at Stanford University. He holds a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in Music Composition and related fields from the University of California, San Diego (1992, 1994, 2000). His expertise spans composition, music theory, and interdisciplinary arts, with notable collaborations in film and literature. He has taught at UC San Diego and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Ulman’s research focuses on contemporary music composition, compositional pedagogy, and interdisciplinary artistic practices. His works have been performed by renowned ensembles like the Arditti Quartet and Séverine Ballon. He co-edited an issue of Contemporary Music Review on compositional pedagogy and has published essays in academic journals.
He has received awards including a Fromm Foundation commission and a Hewlett Fellowship. Since 2004, he has co-organized the Poto Festivals (potoweb.org), a multidisciplinary arts platform. Ulman is also a violinist with the sfSoundGroup and actively contributes to experimental music communities.
