Dr. Erik Ugland is an Associate Professor at Marquette University's Diederich College of Communication, specializing in Digital Media and Performing Arts. His academic career includes a Ph.D., M.A., J.D., and B.A., all from the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on media law, First Amendment theory, regulatory frameworks, and media ethics. Ugland teaches courses in media law, ethics, and policy, including COMM 3800 Media Law and DGMD 4800 Digital Media Law and Policy.
His recent publications explore topics such as the legal implications of publishing illegally acquired information, comparative communication rights frameworks, and the evolution of media law education. He has presented at major international conferences like IAMCR and AEFJMC, addressing issues like cross-border communication rights and the human right to seek information.
Ugland’s professional experience includes roles as a Fellow at the Silha Center for Media Ethics & Law and Research Associate at institutions like the Freedom Forum World Center. He actively contributes to scholarly organizations such as AEJMC and ICA.
