Erik Thomas

Erik R. Thomas is a Professor in the Department of English at North Carolina State University, affiliated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He serves as Director of the Linguistics Program and has held various departmental roles. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin (1995), an M.A. in English from Texas A&M (1989), and an A.B. in Botany from Duke University (1988).

Thomas specializes in sociophonetics, focusing on acoustic analysis of language variation, perceptual experiments, and the study of minority English varieties. His research explores dialect formation, particularly in Mexican American communities in Texas, and examines historical and geographical patterns in American English. Key projects include analyzing vowel shifts in Ohio and investigating African American English through phonetic experimentation.

His scholarly contributions span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles. Notable works include Mexican American English: Substrate Influence and the Birth of an Ethnolect (2019) and Sociophonetics: An Introduction (2011). His research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and NC State University.
