Erik Schartner

Dr Erik Schartner is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences, Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology, University of Adelaide, specializing in applied optical sensing for industrial and commercial applications.

Research Interests:

Dr Schartner develops optical sensing solutions leveraging light-matter interactions, with core expertise in fibre optics and spectroscopy. His work bridges laboratory research and field deployment:

• Real-time asbestos identification via novel fluorescence and multispectral sensing
• Mineralogical analysis systems for mining applications
• Antiresonant hollow-core fibre fabrication using fused silica/silicate/tellurite glasses
• Non-destructive provenance analysis of wine/whisky through optical properties

Funding and partnerships include The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, Australian Government Business Research and Innovation Initiative, Flawless Photonics, IRFlex Corporation, and Northrop Grumman Australia, highlighting strong industry-academia collaboration in translating optical technologies to real-world problems.
