Erik Mathijs is a full professor at KU Leuven, affiliated with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering. He leads the Bioeconomics unit and serves as a member of the Leuven One Health Institute and the KU Leuven Plant Institute. His research focuses on sustainability transitions, circular business models, and resilient food systems. Recent projects include exploring carbon farming, optimizing fertilizer costs, and evaluating the protein transition in Flanders.
He supervises PhD students and co-leads projects addressing food system resilience, agro-business models, and sustainable supply chains. His work spans policy analysis, systems thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration, with publications in journals like Nature Food and Journal of Cleaner Production.
Mathijs teaches courses on bioeconomics, sustainable agriculture, and agribusiness. He actively contributes to policy initiatives, including EU-funded projects like SURE-farm and REFORM, emphasizing systemic approaches to agricultural challenges.
