Erik Inglis is a Professor of Medieval Art History at Oberlin College, part of the College of Arts and Sciences' Art History Department. He holds a BA from Oberlin College (1989), MA and PhD from New York University (1991, 1998). His research focuses on medieval art, particularly court art in France and Flanders, with an emphasis on Jean Fouquet and the medieval art historical imagination.
He teaches courses on medieval art, illuminated manuscripts, and book studies. Recent publications include articles on relic veneration in medieval Rome ( Speculum , 2021) and the medieval understanding of artistic techniques ( Quintana , 2017). He has presented widely, including at Yale University’s Medieval-Renaissance Forum (2020).
His work spans manuscripts, architectural history, and material culture, with key contributions to the study of medieval France’s artistic identity. He is affiliated with Oberlin’s Allen Memorial Art Museum and frequently uses its collections in teaching.
