Dr. Erik Gray is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Specializing in 19th-century British poetry and poetics, his research explores Romantic and Victorian literature, literary influence, and classical reception. He holds degrees from Cambridge University (BA) and Princeton University (PhD), and has published extensively on poets ranging from Milton to Tennyson.
His scholarly work examines poetic form, intertextuality, and the evolving conventions of poetic expression from the Romantic era through the Victorian period. Current projects investigate comparative approaches to poetic influence across European traditions.
Professor Gray teaches Columbia's introduction to the English major (Literary Texts and Critical Methods) alongside seminars on 19th-century British literature and transhistorical poetry studies. His pedagogical approach emphasizes close reading and historical contextualization.
