Erik Gernand

Erik Gernand is a Teaching Professor in the Radio/Television/Film Department at Northwestern University’s School of Communication. He specializes in Cinema-Film, Media Production, Playwriting, and Screenwriting, with a focus on families in crisis and queer characters.

• Education: MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage from Northwestern University, BA in Telecommunications Production and German from Ball State University

Research Interests blend theatrical storytelling and cinematic expression to explore social issues, LGBTQ+ representation, and psychological complexity through family dynamics and political allegory. His work often merges dark themes with comedy and humanistic insight.

Artistic Output spans plays and short films that have screened at over 100 international festivals, including SXSW, Palm Springs International ShortFest, and Logo Channel broadcasts. Notable works like Year One (2021) and The Beautiful Dark (2015) interrogate extremism, personal flaws, and queer narratives.
