Erik Borglund is a Professor of Archival and Information Science at Mid Sweden University's Department of Communication, Quality Technology and Information Systems (KKI) in Sundsvall. He concurrently holds an associate professorship in Computer and Systems Science and serves as pro-department. Appointed professor in 2020, he manages the master's program in sustainable information provision and represents archival science as subject lead. His work is anchored at the Risk and Crisis Research Centre (RCR) and Forum for Digitalization (FODI), with additional visiting professorship at Umeå University's police education unit since 2020.
His academic foundation includes:
- PhD in Archival and Information Science, Mid Sweden University (2008)
Borglund pioneers applied archival science in crisis contexts, investigating documentation practices during emergencies and cross-organizational information sharing. His research examines preservation of ephemeral crisis records (Post-it notes, whiteboards) and designs IT systems for temporary crisis management staffs. Leveraging his police officer background, he bridges archival theory with operational law enforcement needs, focusing on situational awareness and collaborative workflows in high-stakes environments.
Publication analysis reveals sustained focus on crisis-driven recordkeeping, with recent works emphasizing police intervention tactics, e-archives for open data governance, and cross-border exercise design. His output shows increasing integration of archival science with real-time crisis response systems, particularly addressing remote collaboration challenges during pandemics and heightened alert scenarios.

As program manager for sustainable information provision, Borglund mentors students across undergraduate to doctoral levels in archival science and data systems. His research leadership spans projects like GSS3 (Norway-Sweden border crisis exercises) and evidence-based police tactics development, securing collaborations with national agencies including SOS Alarm and the Swedish Police Authority. Current grants focus on hybrid staff operations during peacetime emergencies.
He directs RCR's crisis documentation initiatives and co-leads FODI's digitalization research, maintaining active partnerships with police education units and emergency management agencies across Scandinavia for real-world implementation of archival frameworks.
