Erica Sloan is a Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University, affiliated with the Drug Discovery Biology Theme at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She also holds an Associate Professor position at the University of California, Los Angeles (2010–present). Her research focuses on the intersection of cancer biology, neuroscience, and stress signaling, particularly investigating how neuroendocrine pathways influence cancer progression, metastasis, and therapeutic responses. She has led or collaborated on over 25 projects, including studies targeting cancer cachexia, neural-inflammatory interactions in cancer recurrence, and drug repurposing strategies.
Key research interests include β-adrenergic signaling in cancer cells and immune modulation, the role of stress hormones in metastasis, and developing therapies leveraging neuropharmacological agents like β-blockers. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being. Notable projects include investigating anesthesia techniques' impact on cancer outcomes and targeting lymph-pancreas interactions for pancreatic cancer treatment.
Her publications emphasize translational research, with recent focus on β-blockers' efficacy in breast and pancreatic cancers, stress-driven tumor dissemination, and neuroimmune interactions. Media attention includes coverage of her work on chronic stress exacerbating cancer progression. She has been a Chief Investigator or collaborator in funded projects totaling over AUD millions, addressing drug delivery innovations and cancer neuroscience.
Erica Sloan’s research bridges molecular biology, pharmacology, and clinical applications, aiming to translate discoveries into improved cancer therapies and patient care strategies.
