Erica Rowan is a Senior Lecturer in Classical Archaeology at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her research focuses on Roman archaeology and archaeobotany, investigating ancient foodways, consumption practices, and economic developments. She leads excavations in Tunisia, Turkey, and Italy, analyzing archaeobotanical data to trace the globalization of Roman food culture.
Rowan holds a BA in Classics and BSc in Health Sciences from McMaster University (Canada), an MSt in Classical Archaeology, and a DPhil in Archaeology from the University of Oxford. She served as a research and teaching fellow at the University of Exeter before joining Royal Holloway in 2017.
Her teaching includes courses on Roman archaeology, Pompeii, ancient Italian architecture, and sensory archaeology. She actively contributes to the Archaeology of Food and Foodways journal and co-organized the 'Unpalatable, Inedible and Indigestible' conference in 2021. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to food security and cultural preservation.

Rowan’s research integrates physical food remains, material culture, and ancient texts to reconstruct dietary practices and their socio-economic impacts. Recent publications explore paleoparasitology, sensory archaeology pedagogy, and urban food systems.
