Erica Houts Shumener

Dr. Erica Shumener is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Syracuse University specializing in metaphysics and philosophy of science. Her research examines laws of nature, identity criteria, and grounding relations, with particular attention to anti-Humean frameworks.

Publications develop theories of nomic governance, metaphysical intrinsicality, and explanations of identity/difference. Current projects analyze qua-relations in philosophical discourse and power-based ontologies.

She received the Sanders Prize runner-up recognition (2024) for 'Permeating Properties' and previously held a UNAM postdoctoral fellowship. Teaching includes courses on metaphysics, critical thinking, and personal identity.
