Eric Riedl is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame, part of the College of Science. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (2015) and a B.S. from the University of Notre Dame (2010). His research focuses on algebraic geometry, particularly birational geometry, rational curves, hypersurfaces, and rationality problems. He investigates the geometry of hypersurfaces in projective space using rational curves and explores conjectures like Lang’s and Manin’s. Riedl studies normal bundles of curves and their implications for moduli spaces, as well as the behavior of rational surfaces on hypersurfaces. His work addresses longstanding questions in birational geometry and hyperbolicity.
He mentors postdoc Ryan Contreras and advises current graduate students Jaziel Torres and Emma Dooley, in addition to former students Eric Jovinelly and Wern Yeong. His research has led to publications on topics such as normal bundles of rational curves and applications of Grassmannian techniques in hypersurfaces. He actively organizes the Algebraic Geometry and Commutative Algebra Seminar at Notre Dame.
Riedl’s office is located in 142 Hayes-Healy Bldg, and he can be reached via email at eriedl@nd.edu.
