Eric P. Spana is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Biology at Duke University, affiliated with the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. His academic roles include teaching and research, with positions evolving from Assistant Professor of the Practice (2011–2018) to his current rank. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Illinois (1995) and a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh (1989).
His research focuses on Drosophila genetics, genomic structure, and educational initiatives like Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE). Key topics include mutation analysis, genome evolution, and the application of bioinformatics in education. Notable work includes studies on the tilt and speck mutations in Drosophila, retrotransposon-driven genome expansion, and inositol phosphate signaling pathways.
Spana has been recognized for teaching excellence, receiving the 2015 Trinity Honors award. He contributed to a National Institutes of Health-funded grant (2007–2013) on regulatory region evolution. His teaching spans courses in molecular biology, genetics, and independent research, including BIOLOGY 201L/203L and CURE-based programs. He actively promotes genomics education through initiatives like the Genomics Education Partnership.
