As a psychiatric and genetic epidemiologist, Dr. Mick's research has evolved from genetic studies of behavioral disorders to broader health services research. His early work focused on identifying genetic susceptibility to disruptive behavior and mood disorders in children, adolescents and adults through genome-wide association studies of ADHD, pediatric bipolar disorder, cognition, and emotional self-regulation. More recently, his research has shifted toward understanding how behavioral phenotypes and their associated genetic factors influence cardiovascular disease incidence, while expanding into Medicaid policy analysis and primary care for complex patients.
Dr. Mick's publication record shows a significant transition from primarily psychiatric genetics research to health services and policy research. His recent publications (2021-2025) predominantly address Medicaid policy, payment models for complex patients, healthcare utilization patterns, and health equity issues. This represents a notable evolution from his earlier work (2002-2015) which centered on ADHD genetics, bipolar disorder, and psychiatric epidemiology. His research demonstrates increasing engagement with real-world healthcare systems and policy implications.
Dr. Mick has collaborated extensively with colleagues including Ash AS, Alcusky MJ, Sabatino MJ, and others on numerous studies examining healthcare delivery systems, particularly within Medicaid. His work addresses critical issues in healthcare payment reform, risk adjustment methodologies, and ensuring equitable care for medically and socially complex populations. Through these collaborations, he has contributed significantly to understanding how healthcare systems can better serve vulnerable patient populations.
