Eric Monkkonen was a Professor of History and Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he began his career in 1976. He specialized in urban history, crime, and public finance, leaving a legacy of influential research on homicide trends, urbanization, and demographic shifts. He earned his B.A. (English), M.A. (American Studies), and Ph.D. (History) from the University of Minnesota.
Monkkonen's research combined quantitative and qualitative methods, analyzing coroner's records to study violence in cities like New York, London, and Liverpool. His work explored how immigration, urbanization, and socio-economic factors influenced homicide rates. Key grants supported his research, including from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Justice, and National Endowment for the Humanities.
He served as president of the Urban History Association and Social Science History Association, and contributed to the National Consortium for Violence Research. Colleagues praised him as a dedicated teacher and active university citizen. His posthumous essay in the American Historical Review (2006) further cemented his expertise in explaining America’s exceptional homicide patterns within an international context.
