Eric McFarland is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). His work focuses on coupling fundamental surface processes with novel materials for energy and chemical production, particularly through molten metal and salt reactors. He has held prestigious roles, including the Dow Chemical Chair at the University of Queensland and leadership positions in startups like Symyx Technologies and Gas Reaction Technologies Inc. (GRT).
- BS: Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, University of California, Berkeley (1980)
- MS: Nuclear Engineering, University of California, Berkeley (1982)
- PhD: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1987)
- MD: Harvard Medical School (1988)
McFarland’s research spans catalysis, CO2-free hydrogen production, methane conversion, and techno-economic modeling of energy systems. He has pioneered studies on molten salt and metal reactors for sustainable energy solutions, including halogen-mediated processes and carbon sequestration.
His scientific awards include the NSF Presidential Young Investigator (1990-1995), American Nuclear Society Special Award (1992), and University of California Regents Fellowship (1980-1981). He has authored over 190 papers and holds 25 patents.
McFarland has led industrial collaborations and founded technology companies. He also practiced part-time in Emergency Medicine and volunteered as a physician, integrating his engineering and medical expertise.
