Schwartz is an Instructional Professor and Director of the Machine Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Florida's College of Engineering, Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering. He holds a PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Florida (1995), along with MS and dual BS degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the same institution (1989, 1984).
His research focuses on Robotics, Embedded Systems, and Autonomous Agents, with particular emphasis on underwater and surface vehicles. He has led the development of multiple award-winning robotic systems, including the SubjuGator AUV and NaviGator maritime systems. His work spans control systems, sensor design, and collaborative robotics, often emphasizing modularity, cost-effectiveness, and real-world applications.
Dr. Schwartz has been recognized for his teaching and mentorship, earning titles such as HWCOE Faculty Adviser/Mentor of the Year (2024), ECE Department Faculty of the Year (2022-2023), and multiple Teacher of the Year awards (2002, 2012). He has advised teams that won world championships in RoboSub (2005-2007), RoboBoat (2013), and the Maritime RobotX Challenge (2019).
His advising and grant efforts have supported student-led projects in autonomous systems, robotics competitions, and educational outreach. He is affiliated with the Machine Intelligence Laboratory (MIL), which develops advanced robotics technologies and promotes STEM education through hands-on projects.
