Eric M. Meyers is the Bernice and Morton Lerner Professor of Judaic Studies at Duke University. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and an M.A. from Brandeis University. As an active archaeologist, Meyers has directed or co-directed significant excavations in Israel and Italy, contributing substantially to the field of biblical archaeology.
His research focuses on Jewish studies, biblical archaeology, ancient Mediterranean religions, and rabbinical traditions. Meyers explores the intersection of archaeology, textual analysis, and religious history, particularly examining material culture from antiquity to understand religious practices and societal structures.
Meyers has authored or co-authored numerous scholarly books including Alexander to Constantine: Archaeology of the Land of the Bible, The Pottery from Ancient Sepphoris, Light Against Darkness: Dualism in Ancient Mediterranean Religion, and The Bible in the Public Square: Its Enduring Influence in American Life. His works demonstrate consistent focus on archaeological methodology, religious development, and cultural interpretation.
Beyond academia, Meyers serves as a Chazan (cantor), integrating his scholarly work with religious practice.
