Dr. Eric Langley is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Lang & Literature at University College London, where he has worked since 2014. He previously held teaching roles at the Universities of Leeds, York, St Andrews, Sheffield, and Royal Holloway. His academic career spans over two decades of teaching Shakespeare and Renaissance literature alongside broader literary periods and genres.

Langley’s research explores Shakespeare’s engagement with Renaissance ocular theory, classical influences, and concepts of selfhood through his trilogy of Oxford University Press monographs. His Narcissism and Suicide in Shakespeare and his Contemporaries (2009) examines introspection and individualism, while Shakespeare’s Contagious Sympathies (2018) investigates plague metaphors and sympathetic communication. His current work Causal Shakespeare analyzes King Lear through historical causality frameworks.
His poetry collection Raking Light (2017) was shortlisted for the Felix Dennis Award, and he co-authored These. Insuing. Sonnets (2019). Langley’s publications span journals like Spenser Studies, Textual Practice, and Renaissance Studies, covering topics from Renaissance erotica to Lucretian atomism.
