Eric T. Jennings is a Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Toronto (Victoria College) and a leading scholar of modern France, French colonialism, and the Francophone world. He specializes in transcontinental histories of empire, conflict, and colonial governance. Jennings holds a PhD from UC Berkeley (1998) and undergraduate degrees from the University of Toronto.
His research focuses on colonial dynamics across Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean, with notable works exploring Vichy France’s tropical territories, French colonial urbanism, and medical practices in imperial contexts. Current projects include a global history of vanilla as a commodity.
Jennings has authored six major monographs translated into French and Vietnamese, earning prestigious awards like the Prix des Ambassadeurs and the Gilbert Chinard Prize. He is a Royal Society of Canada Fellow (2019) and recipient of the 2014 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. His grants include six SSHRC Insight Grants and Jackman Humanities Institute fellowships.
He advises on colonial history research and collaborates internationally, with archival work spanning five continents. Jennings contributes to interdisciplinary projects through the Centre for European and Eurasian Studies and teaches courses on global colonialism at the University of Toronto’s Downtown campus.
