Eric Hochberg is an Associate Professor at Arizona State University (ASU), holding appointments in the School of Ocean Futures and the School of Earth and Space Exploration. He is also a Senior Scientist at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS). His research focuses on coral reef systems ecology, leveraging airborne/spaceborne imaging spectroscopy and remote sensing technologies. Hochberg pioneered NASA’s COral Reef Airborne Laboratory (CORAL), a $15M mission surveying reef ecosystems across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
He earned his Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (2002). His expertise spans marine ecology, oceanography, and remote sensing applications. Hochberg actively contributes to national/international committees, including the National Academy of Sciences’ Decadal Survey for Earth Science, and serves on editorial boards for Remote Sensing of Environment and Frontiers of Marine Science.
Teaching includes advanced graduate courses like Coral Reef Functional Ecology and undergraduate courses such as Coral Reef Ecology. He mentors global undergraduates through 12-week internships at BIOS. His work bridges remote sensing innovation with ecosystem analysis, emphasizing coral reef resilience under environmental pressures.
